What is a Transmission?

Your transmission is one of the most important components in your vehicle. Its primary job is to transfer power from the engine to the wheels and it does this by switching between gears. There are two main types of transmissions: manual and automatic. A manual transmission has five or six forward gears that the driver shifts between using what is called a “clutch.” An automatic transmission has a torque converter that switches between gear so the driver does not have to.

Fixing a Transmission Fluid Leak

Transmission fluid is necessary to keep your transmission running smoothly. If you find yourself needing to top off your transmission fluid each month or you see puddles of transmission fluid under your car, this can indicate that you have a transmission leak. A leak happens when there is a crack in a gasket or seal of your transmission or there is a loose bolt or puncture in your transmission pan. A transmission leak can lead to:

High temperatures
Low pressures
Damage to discs and gears
Transmission failure

In this cause, we can rebuild your transmission by removing and disassembling the entire transmission. During this process we clean and inspect each part for wear and tear. Then, we replace any worn out or damaged parts.

Servicing Your Transmission Fluid

Topping off and changing out your transmission fluid can fix and prevent many transmission problems. Transmission fluid is used in all automatic transmission and some manual transmissions (“transmission oil” is sometimes used). When your transmission fluid is too low, it can lead to transmission problems. It’s important to check your fluid levels and the quality of your fluid regularly. Your transmission fluid should smell neutral and be mostly clear. If it is opaque or smells foul this means that your transmission needs repairs.
